NAVIGATION
We've come a long way from a lead-line and compass. Even 20 years ago GPS, chartplotters and smart autopilots were nearly science fiction. Nowadays, we can cross oceans knowing our exact location every moment. We can safely navigate tricky shoals, narrows and tidal rapids with tools like super-accurate chartplotters and real-time tide and current displays. We can see through fog, rain, darkness and even around corners to know not only where we are, but with AIS, we can know who else is near us and where they're going.
Simply said: Navigation means safety, and the more accurate, intuitive, and user-friendly your navigation system, the more safe you'll be. Paper charts, lead lines, compasses and an alert watch will always be necessary, but these days almost any skipper can also enjoy the ease, precision and peace of mind computers and electronics can provide.
